This project will highlight older churches that I have photographed. Some have been maintained, others are in various states of decline and some are about to be gone. While in the US Army, in the early '70s, I would visit the library at the US Army Hospital - Fort Polk, as I worked in the lab there. There was book that I came across and checked out multiple time during my stay there. Fast forward to the early 2000's and I had just setup my home darkroom and started to look for a project of some kind to help hone my photography skills. Remembering that book, Robert Adams 'White Churches of the Plains', I set out to find old churches similar to those that Adams photographed. The book was Robert Adams first published work, published in 1970, I found the work in 1973. The book became the inspiration for the Texas Church Project, with work begining in 2004 after I bought a Eastman No. 1 5x7 camera and I starte with the idea of 100 year old churches with a 100 year old camera. The project took on new life as I discussed it with Lee Carmichael, then he ask is we could invite David Brown, then Jeremy Moore and Matt Magruder. The images were captured with a varity of cameras from view cameras ranging in size from 4x5 to 12x20 and medium fromat 6x6 and 6x7. Printing was either silver gelatin black and white, platinum and palladium hand coated to gum over palladium. We would often meet as a group, sometimes just a couple of us and other times we went out to photograph the old churches of Texas with a loose mandate that the church be at least 100 years old. The project led to several shows of our work and even a regional television program, Country Reporter, did a segment on the project.
